Research Statement

AI generated · Oct 28, 2026

David M. J. Lazer's indexed work centers on the social and informational dynamics of digital life, from the science of fake news and its circulation during the 2016 U.S. presidential election to the limits of big-data inference illustrated by Google Flu Trends. His senior-authored research with Andrew M. Guess and others established exposure to and sharing of fake news on Twitter, while related work examines online misinformation's public-health consequences and whether corrections actually backfire. Earlier network science includes inferring friendship ties from mobile phone records, and his organizational research contrasts exploration and exploitation in networked teams. Beyond these, Lazer contributed as a middle author to machine behaviour, the interdisciplinary framing of autonomous systems' societal effects, and to who wants to deliberate, and why, on the motivations behind political deliberation. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed alongside these publications. Taken together, the listed works trace a consistent line: using computational methods to test how networks, platforms, and institutions shape what people know, share, and believe.
