Darren J. Baker's research centers on how senescent cells accumulate and drive aging and disease, work anchored in transgenic mouse models that allow selective elimination of these cells. His early first-author studies linked BubR1 insufficiency to premature aging phenotypes and infertility, and later showed that clearance of p16Ink4a-positive senescent cells delays ageing-associated disorders (3,668 citations) and that naturally occurring p16Ink4a-positive cells shorten healthy lifespan. As senior author, he extended this line to the brain, demonstrating that clearance of senescent glial cells prevents tau-dependent pathology and cognitive decline. Beyond these lead-author works, Baker contributed as a middle author to widely cited reviews and studies, including senescent intimal foam cells in atherosclerosis and local clearance of senescent cells in post-traumatic osteoarthritis. His indexed outputs remain publication-based, with no separate software, datasets, patents, or grants listed. Across this portfolio, the through-line is a shift from characterizing BubR1-related aneuploidy and cancer toward using senescent-cell clearance as a therapeutic strategy in aging and neurodegeneration.
