Research Statement

Da Yan's indexed work centers on occupant behavior modeling for building performance simulation, a line of inquiry that runs from early frameworks through large international collaborations. His most-cited first-author paper, on the current state and future challenges of occupant behavior modeling, anchors a research program he later extended through IEA EBC Annex 66, which defined and simulated occupant behavior in buildings. A related senior-author review on buildings energy information, trends, end-uses and drivers has become one of his most-cited outputs, while DeST, the integrated building simulation toolkit he helped originate, underpins much of this applied modeling work. Beyond that core, Yan contributed to the "ten questions" framing of occupant behavior in buildings and to a novel approach for building occupancy simulation, both of which helped shape how the field models occupancy dynamics. His later work includes DeST 3.0, a new-generation building performance simulation platform, and studies on decarbonizing China's building construction by 2060. No software, datasets, grants, or patents are indexed beyond these publications, so the throughline is a sustained focus on simulation tools and occupant-centric modeling.
