Research Statement

AI generated · 23h ago

Craig B. Thompson's research centers on how cancer cells rewire metabolism and evade cell death. His most-cited work, on the metabolic requirements of cell proliferation underlying the Warburg effect (over 16,000 citations), frames aerobic glycolysis as a biosynthetic necessity rather than a defect. Related syntheses on the emerging hallmarks of cancer metabolism and metabolic reprogramming as a cancer hallmark extend this argument, while earlier work on bcl-x as a dominant regulator of apoptotic cell death established his standing in apoptosis biology. Beyond these, Thompson contributed as a middle author to studies of BAX and BAK as a requisite gateway to mitochondrial dysfunction and death, and to an inhibitor of Bcl-2 family proteins that induces regression of solid tumours, both reflecting his apoptosis expertise. His IDH-mutation work on neomorphic 2-hydroxyglutarate production and its hypermethylation phenotype links metabolism to epigenetics. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond publications. Across these works, the through-line is a sustained effort to connect metabolic reprogramming to cell-death control in cancer.
