Christopher K. Glass studies how transcription factors and nuclear receptors control macrophage and microglial identity and inflammatory gene programs. His most-cited senior-author work, on lineage-determining transcription factors priming cis-regulatory elements in macrophages and B cells, remains a foundational reference for enhancer logic in innate immunity. Related work examines PPAR-γ as a negative regulator of macrophage activation and a SUMOylation-dependent pathway mediating transrepression of inflammatory genes, while his first-author reviews synthesize mechanisms of inflammation in neurodegeneration and atherosclerosis. His later Science study on environment-dependent transcriptional networks specifying human microglia identity extends this regulatory framework to the brain. Earlier contributions include co-authored structural and mechanistic work on ligand binding and co-activator assembly of PPAR-γ and on a CBP integrator complex linking nuclear receptors to AP-1 inhibition, both of which helped establish the cofactor-exchange model he later applied to inflammation. He also contributed to microglial state nomenclature, a community consensus effort. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these works, the through-line is a shift from nuclear-receptor coregulator biochemistry toward cell-type-specific enhancer networks in macrophages and microglia, with Bing Ren among recurring genomics collaborators.
