Christopher Hahn's indexed work centers on the electrocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide, particularly the design of catalysts and reactor architectures that govern selectivity. His early first-author work on engineering copper surfaces to steer CO2 reduction toward oxygenates and hydrocarbons (410 citations) established a template for tuning product distribution, while later senior-author studies extend this to bimetallic Zn-Cu systems that boost activity and selectivity for CO production and a widely cited review of gas diffusion electrodes, reactor designs, and key metrics for low-temperature CO2 electrolysers (633 citations). Across these, the throughline is a mechanistic interest in how surface composition and electrode microenvironment dictate reactivity. Hahn also contributed as a middle author to several high-impact syntheses, including a comprehensive review of electrochemical CO2 reduction on copper in aqueous electrolyte (5,252 citations) and an analysis of what it would take for renewably powered electrosynthesis to displace petrochemical processes (3,048 citations); work with David A. Cullen appears in this collaborative space. In later senior-author roles he has examined eliminating economic tradeoffs in single-pass CO2 utilization and active sites and mechanisms of benzyl alcohol oxidation on nickel-iron oxyhydroxide electrodes, suggesting a broadening beyond CO2 alone. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond these publications, so the trajectory rests on this arc of electrocatalysis work.
