Charlotte L. Scott's research centers on the origins, identity, and niche-dependent behavior of tissue-resident macrophages, particularly in the liver and intestine. Her most-cited work uses spatial proteogenomics to map evolutionarily conserved hepatic macrophage niches (over 1,000 citations), while earlier first-author work traced how bone marrow-derived monocytes self-renew and differentiate into Kupffer cells. A related senior-author study identified an osteopontin-expressing recruited macrophage subset distinct from Kupffer cells in fatty liver, and her reviews have consolidated thinking on niche competition as a determinant of tissue-resident macrophage origin. Beyond these, Scott contributed as a middle author to consortium-scale efforts, including a single-cell atlas of mouse brain macrophages shaped by ontogeny and tissue environment and work showing that stellate cells, hepatocytes, and endothelial cells imprint Kupffer cell identity on colonizing monocytes, the latter connecting to collaborator Bart N. Lambrecht's broader macrophage biology network. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond her publications. Across these outputs, the throughline is a sustained inquiry into how tissue context and developmental origin jointly specify macrophage identity.
