Charles Reay Mackay's indexed work centers on how chemokine receptors define T-cell trafficking and inflammatory disease, a thread visible from early studies showing that CXCR3 and CCR5 mark T-cell subsets in specific inflammatory reactions through later reviews framing chemokines as central immunological regulators. His most-cited lead-author work extends this into host–microbe interaction, including GPR43-dependent regulation of inflammatory responses by gut microbiota and evidence that dietary fibre and metabolite-sensing receptors GPR43 and GPR109A shape gut homeostasis via the inflammasome, alongside work arguing that asthma has developmental origins influenced by maternal diet and bacterial metabolites. Beyond these, he contributed as a middle author to the identification of CCR3 and CCR5 as β-chemokine receptors enabling primary HIV-1 infection and to short-chain fatty acid biology in health and disease, both of which underpin his later senior-author themes. Collaborations with Alison N. Thorburn and David A. Hafler appear within this body of work. No software, datasets, patents, or funded grants are indexed beyond publications. Taken together, the named works trace a consistent arc: from chemokine-receptor mapping of T-cell subsets toward diet-, microbiota-, and metabolite-driven explanations of inflammatory disease.
