Chaoliang Tan's indexed work centers on the synthesis, phase control, and device applications of ultrathin two-dimensional nanomaterials. His most-cited review, ultrathin 2D nanomaterials and their emerging properties, has drawn over 5,000 citations, while a companion review on transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheet-based composites established routes to hybrid TMD architectures. Related studies extend to wet-chemical synthesis of non-layer-structured 2D nanomaterials and to epitaxial growth of hybrid nanostructures, suggesting a sustained interest in how layered and non-layered materials can be grown and assembled with controlled dimensionality. Beyond these, middle-author contributions include Ni3S2 nanorod/Ni foam composite electrodes for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution and work on phase engineering of nanomaterials, both of which connect to his later focus on 1T-phase TMD nanodots for electrochemical hydrogen evolution. His portfolio also spans infrared photodetectors based on 2D materials and nanophotonics and ultrathin ternary chalcogenide nanosheets for fluorescence DNA sensing, pointing to applications in optoelectronics and sensing. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed; the record is publication-based, with collaborations including Ali Javey.
