Bruce May's indexed work centers on plant and archaeal molecular genetics, with a recurring thread of transposon-based mutagenesis and gene regulation in maize. His most-cited lead-author study, on differential regulation of strand-specific transcripts from Arabidopsis centromeric satellite repeats, has drawn 188 citations, while his work on a knockout resource for maize via targeted mutagenesis reflects a parallel interest in tools for functional genomics. Earlier in his career, he characterized superoxide dismutase genes in extremely halophilic archaebacteria, tracing their unusual evolutionary history. Beyond these lead-author efforts, May contributed as a middle author to the Reactome pathway knowledgebase, a widely used resource for mapping human biological pathways and processes. He also participated in work on the role of transposable elements in heterochromatin and epigenetic control, connecting his plant-genetics background to broader chromatin biology. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these contributions, his trajectory runs from archaeal gene characterization through maize transposon tools to large-scale pathway and epigenetics resources, with collaborators including Bijay Jassal on the Reactome efforts.
