Britta Denise Hardesty's indexed work centers on the sources, pathways, and ecological consequences of marine plastic pollution. Her most-cited lead-author studies quantify the global and growing threat that plastic debris poses to seabirds, and use expert elicitation to estimate plastic pollution's impacts on marine wildlife, establishing risk frameworks that later work applied taxonomically. A related line links debris ingestion to sea turtle mortality and global ingestion hotspots, while her first-author modeling examines numerical simulations of microplastic distribution and transport pathways in ocean systems. Beyond these, she contributed to a global inventory of small floating plastic debris and to the physical oceanography governing the transport of floating marine debris, both widely cited syntheses of debris dynamics. Her portfolio also spans governance and management questions, including waste abatement campaigns and government policies and continental-scale estimates of marine debris quantities and sources, often developed with collaborator Chris Wilcox. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond her publications. Taken together, the works trace a consistent arc: from measuring and modeling where plastic pollution originates and accumulates, to assessing its biological toll, to evaluating the governance responses meant to curb it.
