Boyi Gan's research centers on how cancer cells manage nutrient and redox stress, with a particular focus on ferroptosis, an iron-dependent form of cell death. His highly cited work on the cystine transporter SLC7A11/xCT as a determinant of ferroptosis sensitivity and nutrient dependency (over 2,500 citations) frames much of this program, alongside studies positioning ferroptosis as a therapeutic vulnerability in cancer. He has also identified DHODH-mediated ferroptosis defence as a targetable weakness and shown that energy-stress-mediated AMPK activation inhibits ferroptosis, linking metabolic signaling to cell-death control. Beyond ferroptosis, Gan has extended this line of inquiry to disulfidptosis, a cell-death mode driven by actin cytoskeleton vulnerability to disulfide stress, and to BAP1-linked metabolic regulation of ferroptosis in tumour suppression. Earlier contributions include middle-author work on oncogenic Kras maintaining pancreatic tumors through anabolic glucose metabolism and on the long noncoding RNA MALAT1 suppressing breast cancer metastasis. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Collectively, these works trace a consistent arc from nutrient and redox biology toward actionable cancer vulnerabilities.
