Bernardo B. N. Strassburg's indexed work centers on spatial planning for ecosystem restoration and the land-use trade-offs that determine where restoration delivers the greatest biodiversity and carbon returns. His most-cited first-author study, global priority areas for ecosystem restoration, maps where restoration could most efficiently recover biodiversity and mitigate climate change, and it remains his most cited output at over 1,100 citations. A parallel line examines the conservation of the Cerrado hotspot and the agricultural intensification needed to spare natural habitat in Brazil, while his senior-authored work compares natural regeneration versus active restoration in tropical forests, finding regeneration often the more successful route. Beyond these, Strassburg contributed as a middle author to syntheses including the IPBES approach to valuing nature's contributions to people and area-based conservation in the twenty-first century, both of which frame restoration within broader biodiversity policy. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these works, the throughline is a quantitative, policy-facing effort to identify where limited restoration and conservation resources can be spent most effectively, connecting global prioritization with regional land-use realities.
