Benjamin Poulter's indexed work centers on the terrestrial carbon cycle and its climate feedbacks, particularly where semi-arid ecosystems drive interannual variability in the global carbon cycle—a first-author study whose 1,444 citations mark it as a touchstone in the field. A parallel thread concerns wetland methane emissions as a driver of 21st-century climate change, developed in a senior-author paper, and the global wetland contribution to atmospheric methane growth rates, which he led. He has also shaped how Earth system models represent vegetation, notably through plant functional type classification and mapping for land-surface schemes. Beyond these, he contributed as a middle author to large community efforts, including the Global Methane Budget and the Global Carbon Budget series, and to the greening of the Earth and its drivers. His senior-authored Wetland Area and Dynamics for Methane Modeling (WAD2M) dataset and land-use harmonization datasets for annual global carbon budgets show a sustained commitment to open, model-ready data products. Collaborations with Christopher R. Schwalm and Charles D. Koven connect this work to broader carbon-cycle and Earth-system modeling communities. Across these outputs, the throughline is a career spent linking wetland and land-surface processes to the global carbon and methane budgets.
