Bart L. Haagmans's indexed work centers on the pathogenesis, receptor biology, and zoonotic origins of emerging coronaviruses. His senior-author studies identified dipeptidyl peptidase 4 as the functional receptor for the emerging human coronavirus-EMC (over 2,000 citations) and traced MERS-CoV infection in dromedary camels back to an outbreak source, while later work characterized SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses in COVID-19 patients. Comparative pathogenesis studies in nonhuman primates, alongside an organoid-derived bronchioalveolar model of SARS-CoV-2 infection of human alveolar type II-like cells, suggest a sustained focus on how these viruses enter and damage the respiratory tract. Beyond these, his middle-author contributions include real-time RT-PCR detection of 2019-nCoV and work showing that SARS-CoV-2 productively infects human gut enterocytes, extending the picture beyond the lung. Earlier collaborative genomics helped characterize a newly discovered coronavirus associated with acute respiratory distress syndrome in humans. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these works, the through-line is a translational virology program linking receptor discovery, animal models, and diagnostic tools, carried out with longstanding collaborators such as Berend‐Jan Bosch.
