Barry N. Kreiswirth's research centers on the molecular epidemiology and evolution of drug-resistant bacterial pathogens. His early work on the genetic basis of toxic shock syndrome exotoxin (1,327 citations) helped establish how staphylococcal virulence determinants are transmitted, while later studies on spa gene sequencing for typing Staphylococcus aureus and the clonal origin of methicillin resistance shaped how laboratories track hospital- and community-acquired lineages. A parallel line of inquiry addresses carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, including genomic dissection of the epidemic ST258 clone. Beyond these, Kreiswirth contributed to consortium efforts on standardized MIRU-VNTR typing for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and to international spoligotyping database classification, both of which underpin global tuberculosis surveillance. His work on the W-Beijing family's global dissemination and on community-associated MRSA epidemiology reflects a sustained focus on how resistant lineages emerge and spread across settings. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Across these studies, the through-line is methodological: developing and applying typing and genomic tools to trace bacterial transmission and resistance.
