Research Statement

AI generated · Oct 15, 2026

Bali Pulendran's research centers on the systems biology of immune responses, particularly how innate immunity shapes vaccine-induced protection. His most-cited work includes a systems biology framework predicting yellow fever vaccine immunogenicity and a comparative systems analysis of mild versus severe COVID-19 infection, both of which helped establish molecular signatures as predictors of immune outcome. Related studies on programming antibody magnitude and persistence through innate immune activation and on molecular signatures of antibody responses across five human vaccines extend this theme, while earlier work characterized distinct dendritic cell subsets and their differential regulation of immune response classes. Beyond these, Pulendran contributed to a foundational review of dendritic cell immunobiology and, as a middle author, to studies of Flt3 ligand-deficient mice revealing its role in hematopoiesis and dendritic cell development. His collaboration with Atul Janardhan Butte reflects the computational and systems-level orientation that runs through much of this work. No software tools, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Taken together, the arc moves from mechanistic dendritic cell biology toward predictive, systems-scale models of human vaccine and infection immunity.
