Axel Timmermann's indexed work centers on the dynamics of El Niño–Southern Oscillation and its sensitivity to greenhouse warming, a line opened by his early modeling study suggesting increased El Niño frequency under future warming (1279 citations) and later synthesized in his co-authored review of ENSO complexity across timescales (1213 citations). A parallel thread examines how Atlantic overturning changes reshape ENSO, including work on AMOC weakening and tropical Pacific response, alongside studies of glacial climate coupling via freshwater discharge and ocean circulation. More recently, his first-author work has extended into climate drivers of early human migration and archaic human habitats. Beyond these, Timmermann contributed as a co-author to highly cited consortium studies, including the projected increase in extreme El Niño events under greenhouse warming and work on wind-driven Pacific circulation and the warming hiatus, the latter involving Clara Deser. Related collaborations with Agus Santoso and Bette L. Otto‐Bliesner appear across this ENSO-and-climate-modeling literature. No software, datasets, patents, or grants are indexed beyond his publications. Taken together, the named works trace a consistent arc: from theoretical and modeling studies of tropical Pacific variability toward integrating paleoclimate, ocean circulation, and human-evolution questions.
