Andrew S. Hoey's indexed work centers on the functional ecology of coral reef fishes, particularly how herbivory and dietary versatility shape reef resilience. His most-cited lead-author studies examine cross-shelf variation in parrotfish roles on the Great Barrier Reef and limited functional redundancy, showing that single species can dominate key ecological processes. Related work on a functional morphospace for labrid skulls and functional versatility supporting coral reef biodiversity links morphological diversity to ecosystem function, while later research addresses catchment-to-sea impacts of terrestrial run-off on benthic ecosystems and biotic homogenization of reef fish assemblages after mass bleaching. Beyond these, Hoey contributed as a middle author to large-scale syntheses, including global patterns of recurrent mass coral bleaching and bright spots among the world's coral reefs, which helped frame reef conservation priorities. His collaborative work with Christina Chemtai Hicks on ocean warming driving tropicalization of fish communities and kelp loss extends this functional perspective to temperate systems. No software, datasets, or patents are indexed beyond his publications. Across these outputs, the through-line is a shift from species-level functional morphology toward understanding how environmental change reorganizes reef communities and the processes they sustain.
